Description

Maffei 1 is a massive elliptical galaxy located in the constellation Cassiopeia. Initially thought to be part of the Local Group of galaxies, it is now recognized as belonging to a separate group known as the IC 342/Maffei Group. The galaxy was named after Paolo Maffei, who discovered it in 1967 through its infrared radiation.
Size 75,000 light-years in diameter. Distance about 11 million lightyears.  It is being heavily obscured by the Milky Way’s stars and dust, If not obscured, Maffei 1 would be one of the largest, brightest, and best-known galaxies in the sky, approximately 3/4 the size of the full moon
